  • Inflation impacts e-grocers too. 2023

    ·

The electronic supermarket container is shrinking as consumers order fewer products in response to price increases, just as they do when they visit a physical store.

Simultaneously, the share of private-label products is increasing, and consumers are increasingly selecting them when purchasing from online supermarkets.

However, it is important to note that despite the fact that there are no longer any restrictions due to Covid-19, the sales of online supermarkets are holding steady (in real terms and excluding inflation), indicating that continued investment in this category of stores is a one-way street for businesses in the organized food retail industry.

Since the average price of each product has also increased by 10%

According to information released by Convert Group on Thursday, the turnover of electronic supermarkets during the first quarter of 2023 was 76 million euros, a 10% increase over the same period in 2022.

This amount excludes the participants in so-called “quick commerce” (grocery delivery in less than 60 minutes), namely BOX, eFood Market, Instashop, Pop Market, Rabbit, and Wolt Market, players who, according to Convert Group, are steadily gaining market share in Greece.

In contrast, the sales generated by Sklavenitis, AB Vassilopoulos, MyMarket, Masoutis, Kritikos, Thanopoulos, and e-fresh.gr through their cooperation with the aforementioned platforms are included. However, in some circumstances these partnerships are essential to the success of electronic sales. A typical example is efood’s exclusive partnership with Sklavenitis.

The price increases have resulted in a 9 percent increase in orders due to the ease with which consumers can conduct market research when shopping at online supermarkets; however, the number of products purchased by consumers is progressively decreasing.

Therefore, in January the average electronic basket contained 33,1 items, in February it contained 32,8 items, and in March it contained 32,2 items. In January-March 2023, the number of items in the average basket decreased by 10% compared to the previous year.

  • Whitney seeks first term on fall ballot 2023

    ·

Michele Whitney hopes to qualify for the November ballot for Clinton County Commissioner in the May 16 Primary.

Whitney graduated from Lock Haven High School in 1986 and spent ten years as a law enforcement officer and sixteen years as an Air Force military spouse.

She has a 25-year background in technology and management, including serving as a Technical Support Engineer and Team Manager for Microsoft.

In addition to her IT industry certifications, Whitney has provided volunteer organizations and small businesses with her IT and small business consultant expertise.

Whitney has participated in numerous public service initiatives over the years, most recently founding the Patriots of Clinton County, an organization that seeks to recruit and support Republican candidates for public office.

The Express recently posed six queries to Whitney regarding herself and county issues. The following were her replies:

Why have you decided to seek election to the board of commissioners?

Whitney: I never intended to enter politics, but after decades of the same representation, we must ask who our government officials serve. The citizens of Clinton County receive little in return for their tax dollars, while our government continues to expand. Meanwhile, the population of our county continues to decline. It is time to abandon the status quo, implement transparency and accountability in county government, and make “we the people” the top priority.

Our rural county faces significant challenges, including population decline, service cuts, and labor shortages.

How would you approach each of these issues if you were a commissioner?

Whitney: According to the Clinton County Comprehensive Plan, fifty percent of the employed county residents work outside of Clinton County, primarily in Bellefonte, State College, and Williamsport. It is probable that they spend the majority of their income on travel, dining, and purchasing outside of our county.

The economic health of our county will improve if more of our residents work locally. In order to rectify this, we require local industry and services. I will work diligently to attract new industries, local businesses, and services to Clinton County. To be successful, we must employ effective outreach methods.

No longer do we print brochures and distribute them in establishments. We live in a technological age and must utilize technology for success.

To reverse the downward trend and effectively serve the public, commissioners must actively engage with the residents of their communities in order to better comprehend their desires and needs. I intend to hold regular town halls and encourage public participation in governance.

Additionally, the county is losing life-saving emergency medical services due to a dearth of qualified EMTs and a financial strain on ambulance and EMS services.

What suggestions do you have for resolving this crucial issue?

Whitney: I believe that our local emergency responders, whether they are EMTs or volunteer firefighters, should be incentivized more effectively. Centre and Lycoming counties have allocated millions of dollars in Act-13 funds to their fire and emergency medical services.

However, none of Clinton County’s Act-13 funds have been allocated to local fire and emergency medical services. I propose establishing a countywide program using Act-13 funds to reimburse EMT certification costs. I also propose instituting countywide tax credits for our local emergency responders as a means of giving something back for all they do for our communities.

Lastly, I support the Keystone Central School District’s proposed Homeland Security Program, which aims to engage our children in their communities and enhance our current fire and emergency medical services.

If elected, will you support the continued development of recreational footpaths, such as the Bald Eagle Valley Trail?

Whitney: The cost of the rails-to-trails initiative to date is at least $5 million, including local taxpayer funds required for matching grants and trail maintenance.

I will support the maintenance of existing trails, but I cannot support further development unless it can be demonstrated that existing trails are increasing tourism and generating enough revenue to cover the costs to taxpayers.

What qualities do you believe make you the most qualified candidate for the position?

As a servant leader with decades of experience, my ability to coordinate groups of individuals to strengthen a team would be of tremendous benefit to the county. I will act with honesty and bravery, serving as an example for others.

I will serve as an example to those around me and motivate them to realize their utmost potential. To achieve success, I will promote frank dialogue and teamwork. I will be an attentive observer and an advocate for those who are unable or unwilling to speak up for themselves. Lastly, I will be an American patriot who serves her country, county, and community, as intended by our Founding Fathers.

Why should voters contemplate you on May 16 when they go to the polls?

Whitney: I have never held an elected position or been a politician. I have no competing interests. The “good ol’ boys” network has been entrenched in Clinton County for decades.

I will work diligently to bring about change that will benefit everyone, not just the “good ol’ boys.” I will demand government transparency and accountability. It is time for change and for your government to begin working for you.

  • Should You Compare Shopify and Wix? WIX (SHOP) 2023

    ·

In the struggle for the top spot in the eCommerce market, should you go with Shopify (NYSE: SHOP) or Wix (NASDAQ: WIX)?

Both businesses provide entrepreneurs with a platform on which they can construct an online store, process payments, manage email marketing and shipping, and so on.

Shopify and Wix are now engaged in a battle for market dominance in the eCommerce industry as an increasing number of retail purchases are being made online.

Shopify is currently in the preeminent position.

Both businesses have varying degrees of profitability. The gross profit margins for Wix are greater, but the levered free cash flow margin for Shopify is slightly higher.

Shopify’s growth for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2022 was over 2,000 basis points higher than Wix’s increase for the same period.

Because of this, the more content-oriented website builder Wix is now trading at a price-to-sales multiple of 3.6x, which is far lower than Shopify’s multiple of 10.76x.

  • Northside ice cream shop opens 2023

    ·

There is a new ice cream store in Kokomo.

Wally and Olly’s is now open at 419 East Gano Street in the northern part of the city. The new restaurant serves ice cream in a variety of forms, including waffle and cake cones, sundaes, and milkshakes.

Ron and Debbie Toth, who opened their first Wally and Olly’s two years ago in a former Standard Oil gas station near the Eel River in Logansport, are behind the new business. Their seven-year-old grandsons, Oliver Toth and Warren Rayls, inspired the store’s moniker.

Ron and Debbie Toth’s traditional style grows. Kokomo with Wally and Olly

The Kokomo Wally and Olly’s will serve both Glover’s Ice Cream and Dean’s Ice Cream, similar to the Logansport location. Hot dogs, Coney dogs, nachos, taco salads, soft shell tacos, pulled pork sandwiches, pretzels, and breadsticks are available at the Kokomo location.

The Toths purchased the 450-square-foot building a year ago and decorated it in their signature old-fashioned manner, with Coca-Cola signs and a life-size Betty Boop figurine.

Wally and Olly’s has been open for less than two weeks, but the support from the community has already exceeded expectations.

Debbie Toth stated, “We are doing far better than I ever anticipated without advertising.” It’s all been word of mouth.

Wally and Olly’s is much more than an ice cream store to the Toths.

Debbie Toth’s late father was so fond of ice cream that he wanted to establish an ice cream parlor but never did. Ron Toth has always desired to open a restaurant, so the couple decided to open an ice cream shop to fulfill both his and Debbie Toth’s parents’ dreams.

Debbie Toth stated, “If my parents were still alive, you can bet they would be over there serving ice cream and sitting in front.” “My father would converse with the young children. My mother would exert authority over others. I have this image in my mind every time I walk through the door.

The new restaurant is also an expression of affection for the north end of the city, where the Toths have resided for decades, raised their children, and made many acquaintances.

Debbie Toth stated, “It warms my heart” regarding the opportunity to establish a business in the north end. It fills my spirit with joy.

  • A request for information regarding an event at Lebanon’s Bike Park has resulted in the opening of a new downtown business.

Arrow Adventure is a new brick-and-mortar consignment store for outdoor recreation equipment that will open on May 13 at 44 E. Mulberry St. According to West Chester owner Niki Marengo, the establishment is believed to be one of the first of its kind in Ohio.

The new business, according to Marengo, will offer used equipment for biking, backpacking, camping, climbing, and paddling, as well as classes and workshops taught by local specialists.

“I took a chance. We connect those who have with those who need.”

Arrow Adventure will host an event at the Lebanon Bike Park on May 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. that will include an introductory mountain bicycling class and a cookout, according to Marengo.

The mountain bike class will be held from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. In an effort to develop inventory, outdoor enthusiasts can sell items under $100 or open a consignment account with the store.

Marengo, a native of Oxford, Ohio, stated that she grew up in the woods and appreciates nature. She began backpacking with a companion seven years ago and has completed five segments of the 2,190-mile, 14-state Appalachian Trail. Typically, she treks 30 to 50 miles per year.

Marengo stated that she appreciates backpacking for the solitude and opportunity to meditate, in addition to the chance to meet new people.

She stated, “I had completed half-marathons, but this (backpacking) seemed like a challenge.”

Scott Brunka, the municipal manager, stated that Marengo contacted the city about organizing an event at the Lebanon Bike Park. After Marengo met with Brunka, the director of the municipal parks, and the owner of Lebanon Brewing Company to discuss the event, he reported that they encouraged her to consider opening a business in Lebanon.

“We promote our parks as part of the city’s quality of life,” Brunka said. “This is an example of our parks promoting the city.”

Brunka, who also values backpacking and outdoor recreation, characterized Arrow Adventure as a unique business opportunity that contributes to the city’s efforts to diversify its business base. Mulberry Street is also located in the festival district of downtown Lebanon.

Brunka exclaimed, “We’re very excited about this new business opportunity.”

Brunka was commended by Marengo for convincing her to establish her business in Lebanon, citing the city’s bike trail system and proximity to other nearby trails, the Bike Park, and numerous downtown activities.

“The space is perfect,” she declared. “So far, following my intuition has been a very positive experience. Lebanon’s downtown is extremely attractive and hosts numerous events. I also enjoy the communal spirit.”

She stated that the establishment is situated in Lebanon’s Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area and has a fence and tables along East Mulberry Street. Marengo intends to acquire a state liquor license in order to establish a small bar in her store as part of the downtown events.

Her father, Dean Dillingham of Oxford, and her brother, Tony, of Springboro, as well as her network of acquaintances, are assisting in preparing the store for its opening.

“They’ve supported me tremendously,” Marengo said.

She credits her network of supportive peers for her success.

“You can’t do it without them,” said Marengo. “Becoming an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart. “You must continue to work diligently every day in order for opportunities to present themselves.
